Qingdao city in Shandong province has made strides in technological innovation and aims to take the lead in the development of modern industrial systems, digital transformation and industrial ecology as well as low-carbon transformation in the next five years.

At a news conference held earlier this month, the local government said Qingdao will make great efforts to build itself into a city with a leading modern industry by 2026.

Over the past two years, Qingdao has made efforts in industrial restructuring and upgrading, which has laid foundations to this target.

Emerging industries in the city have developed quickly. The number of companies in the industrial chain of integrated circuits increased seven times compared with the end of 2016, which has filled the gap in chip manufacturing.

The city is home to around 110 companies related to the virtual reality metaverse industry, including Goertek and Pico. The VR industry is valued at more than 5 billion yuan ($699 million) in Qingdao.

After continuous technological innovation, some industries in Qingdao, such as home appliances and rail transit, have increased their industrial competitiveness and stand at the forefront of the global industry.

Textile, food and beverage, chemical and other traditional industries have improved production efficiency and innovated business models thanks to the industrial internet and digital transformation.

By March, the digitalization of production equipment in the city reached 57.5 percent; the penetration of digital R&D and design tools reached 88 percent; and the numerical control of key processes reached 57.2 percent.

The city's four factories have been included in the World Economic Forum's Global Lighthouse Network, a community consisting of world-leading manufacturers that use Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies.

The local government said Qingdao will build a modern industrial system with integrated development of the real economy, scientific and technological innovation, modern finance and human resources.

The city will focus on 24 major industries to develop advanced manufacturing. They include smart home appliances and rail transit equipment; new energy vehicle and VR industries; industrial layout for integrated circuits; new display devices; biomedicine and medical equipment; and some industries of the future, such as gene technology, marine internet of things and quantum information.

By 2026, the added value of the manufacturing industry is expected to account for more than 30 percent of the city's GDP.

The city will also promote the integration of new-generation information technology, the manufacturing industry and the advanced manufacturing industry with the modern service industry to build a new calling card of intelligent manufacturing in Qingdao.

The city's added value in the digital economy's core industry is expected to account for 12 percent of its GDP. The penetration of industrial internet platforms is expected to reach 50 percent by 2026.

Besides this, the city will make efforts to set up two national manufacturing innovation centers and gather more than 3 million professionals in the next five years.
