Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of the field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate—we can not consecrate—we can not hallow—this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

英语故事

过去，中国学生留美的第一节课就是去餐馆洗盘子。笔者也毫不例外地在UCLA的学生食堂里打过工，洗过盘子dishwasher、擦过地板cleaner、收过饭票checker、饭菜搬运工runner、分过饭server。UCLA学生食堂里的大多数食品是自助拿取。但是，为了避免浪费，牛排steak、狮子头meatball、鸡块chicken等食品，一次只能拿一块。

UCLA的鸡块很大。一只鸡拦腰一刀，胸脯之间、两腿之间分别一刀，只切四块。当进餐者要鸡块时，我们只是问：Leg or chest? 偶尔有人问：thigh(大腿)or chest?

据说有位仁兄在英国一家餐馆吃饭，女招待问其想吃什么，他随口答到：“chicken leg.” 顿时，只见女招待满脸绯红，旁边的英国人也吃吃地笑。那位仁兄以为没说清楚。所以又来了一句： “I’d like chicken leg.” 这时，旁边的英国人哄堂大笑起来。女招待窘了一会儿，然后调皮地说： “Yes, Sr. This is a very sexy leg.” 说着女招待把鸡腿放到了那位仁兄的盘子里。原来chicken leg专指妓女的腿。餐馆里点的鸡腿，应该是：drumstick。

Leg这个词可以造出很多风趣的英语句子。shake a leg就是其中一例。shake a leg表示赶快。例如，一位着急的母亲对儿子这样说道：Come on, shake a leg, son, or you’re going to be late for school.

Stop pulling my leg是另外一例。Stop pulling my leg是不要逗别人、开别人的玩笑的意思。例如：Hey, stop pulling my leg, will you! I don’t believe that girl really said she likes me and would like me to take her out.

Charge 是收费的意思。任何东西要你付出一只胳膊和一条腿，恐怕要价也就太高了。to charge someone an arm and a leg就是汉语宰人的意思。例如， Don’t go to that fancy new restaurant. The food isn’t very good and they charge you an arm and a leg.
